Can you tell me please....
I'm thinking about getting a BD burner. Are portable (external) ones as good as the std intenal ones ? I know they are extra $ That doesn't worry me. Just curious.
Is it actually worth getting one ....period ?

I don't own a BD burner. Hell, I hardly burn a disc (CD/DVD). I do have a BD reader for the rare rip, but it is internal to my home rig.

The answer depends on your system.
External are easier to replace/upgrade.
If using eSata or USB3.
Speed not an issue.

Cost
The physical housing of an external burner costs more to manufacture, and that cost is passed on to the customer. You can shave a few dollars off by purchasing an internal burner instead.

Convenience
An external burner's portability allows you to more easily move it from computer to computer. In this sense, it can act as a portable storage device.

Power Consumption
If you have an older computer whose power supply is struggling to keep up with all its attached devices, an external burner can take off some of the pressure since you can plug it into a wall outlet.

The end result or burn should be identical.

Do you really need BD burner?
If wishing to build library on HDD's.
No.
Ripping to HDD then using something like BD Rebuilder.
No.
In both the above a BD reader/DVD burner will suffice.

If the quality of the rip is better when converted to the HDD then I'll go with your suggestion. Plus price for blank BD's are more than DVD's I assume.
