Getting rid of cable TV Empty Getting rid of cable TV

Post by SithTracy Tue Aug 06, 2013 3:33 am

In the coming days, we are saying goodbye to cable television. I will be putting up a couple of antenna's and doing Hulu Plus (trial) and going back to Netflix after a few years off. It is just not practical to keep it anymore. Price is crazy high and now they want to charge me $25 a month to lease the equipment. No thanks! Anyone else get rid of satellite/cable for an old school antenna?

I never had Pay TV Sith, couldn't see the point in paying for old shows, although I probably missed a lot of good shows as well.

Plus I don't watch a lot of TV, just a few select shows and the news, we have a reasonably good free to air set up, with lots of adds.
An hour show lasts for 42 minutes and the rest is adds..lol!

My antenna arrives tomorrow, won't have time to install until the weekend. Will be going a few days without television at all. For me, not so tough right now as a sports fan with nothing interesting on. Hope the wife and kids can handle it!

Did sign up for the Hulu Plus trial and the kids are hooked. Wife will be home soon... See if it passes her test.

The Hulu experiment overnight sucked. Don't think it is my internet service either. Exceeds their requirements:

Never had these issues with Amazon Prime. Netflix, I have heard has gotten better too.

Hulu has redeemed itself and will be sticking in the home. Their support was pretty good when I contacted them. Ended up getting acceptable usage out of the Panasonic smart TV, but picked up a Roku 3 anyway and glad I did. Love it. Also, got an antenna up on the house and picked up 52 channels. Not all of them are perfect but most work great. We are not missing cable TV and 200 channels of nothing on and a $250 bill.

Guilty, we have sky, I am like Andrew in that I do not watch a lot of TV but I do watch about an hour and a half most days. My wife loves her TV and while she is watching that she is not finding jobs for me to do. There is method in my madness.

As I've said before.. the only thing I ever wanted from pay TV was hockey... maybe SyFy but that's it. Not worth the money. Happy with the freeview here. Still get most of the Cats footy matches. Warmer weather around the corner so more time outside. PLus the missus can buy the TV series from O/S a long time before it's released here. So she's happy.... And that's what it's all about isn't it ? heh heh...

We are doing quite well without cable and do not miss it one bit. I solved my NHL hockey problem. Subscribed to NHL GameCenter Live. $150 US. $21 a month for regular season hockey and I can watch just about anything is not bad.

Also purchased a network tuner (HDHomeRun Dual) and can use my Windows PC to DVR and it streams to our Panasonic smart TV.
