Do We buy a PC or Laptop
That's the burning question guys....
The PC in the study is playing up ... becoming very hard to start up... most times all we get is a flashing cursor in the top left corner. a push of the little reboot button usually helps but takes a while... And this is with a SSD. Running Win 8.1. So unless you might have any ideas what I might have to do to rectify the problem... we might look at getting a new beast'.
Mandy is thinking of a laptop, providing it is good enough to handle the adobe work... other than that it'll be playing on the internet...
The laptops portability is a big plus..
What do you guys use ???

Hi Al, Get one of each , I prefer a desktop, Battery life on laptops is a big downer for me.

Hey Al. Nothing but desktops for me. I do not like laptops. They just seem like "sissy" desktops!
Hey Andrew. Wassup! Where you been. Hope you're doing well.

Good one Andrew.... Cheeky bugger !!!!
Must admit ... Always been a Desktop man.... But I think the portability might clinch the deal for her.
I suppose I can then wipe the current Machine and replace bits and pieces that have worn out.. like the front USB Ports... Speaking of which.... would the new ports need to be 'installed' ?? or once putting them in will work immediately ?

Should be enough free space, try deleting unwanted programs or ones you never use, and pictures take up a lot of storage, apart from that I'm out of ideas, sorry.

Hey Andrew,
I'm doing fine. I still copy my movies every week. Any issues that arise, which is hardly ever, I just deal directly with Gregory.
Sorry to hear about your wife. Hope she gets better real soon. You take care.

Re: Do We buy a PC or Laptop
I'm quite late to this party, Al. I've got a couple of desktop computers and a 2014 MacBook Pro, but I would hesitate to buy a Mac today (I also have a Lenovo ThinkPad for my day job and I am a huge fan of Lenovo ThinkPads as back when they were IBM, I was a certified in the repair and care of them).
When it comes to MacBooks, I am a huge fan of MacOS. I no longer use Adobe products (switched to Affinity Photo and CaptureOne Pro and have not looked back), but used to and they run fine. Mac's hardware today is suspect and IMO, they are designed to fail and have no useful ports (card readers and type-a USB ports missing!!!).
I built a desktop a couple years back (i7-7700K) and it was an upgrade to my ageing i7-2600K. This year, instead of getting a laptop, I built an Intel NUC (Bean Canyon i7)... Small footprint... and it gets used about 80% of the time. Just add RAM, nvme m.2 disk and your OS (Linux or Windows 10)... Great little system. I have a small photo studio in my basement and the device VESA mounts to the back of a monitor I have down there and I can tether my camera to it for use with CaptureOne... Very easy. I got my Dad an i3 Bean Canyon NUC and it is very impressive for a small system for typical browsing, LibreOffice, light MKV encoding and photo work.
I've not been hitting the forum as much as I am busy as heck! Hope you all are doing well.
Let me know what you ended up with, Al!

Re: Do We buy a PC or Laptop
Mandy won't go for a Mac... I agree with fail scenario..
For work we currently use the Surface Pro tablet... Does the job ok for me...
Next ones we get in a few months time will have built in modems... thank goodness !!
I start my stint on standby (on call) tonight ... the best way for me is to use my home wifi... when logging into the Plant. The external modems are crap around the house.
So far as the current PC.... We've cleared a fair bit of crud from the SSD which has possibly helped... haven't had to many dramas over the pas month or so... I reckon it will take a PC meltdown before Mandy will decide what she wants... ha ha !!! Interesting to read your thoughts on adobe there mate....as well as those other items

Re: Do We buy a PC or Laptop
I had WiFi issues at home with spotty coverage, finally put in a business class network in my home (Ubiquiti UniFi products). Not a cheap solution, but effective (but I also have a Networking background albeit, rusty, but got it done).
I do travel with a MacBook Pro (2014 model), but when it dies, I'll probably go back to a Windows based Lenovo ThinkPad for my personal stuff. I am tossing around building an AMD Ryzen based desktop PC next spring. Great bank for buck performance.
